Guest Post and Giveaway: Dead Sexy by Paige Tyler

Published July 18th, 2013

Description:

Can her love save him from a curse worse than death?

Romance author Simone Kent thinks she might just have found the most perfect guy in all of New York City - in bed and out.

But Drake Parrish is about as far from perfect as any man can get. Eight years ago, he was cursed by an evil Voodoo priestess to live part of his life as a zombie. Since then, he has lived like a recluse on New York’s Upper East Side, afraid to go out for fear he’ll suddenly turn into one of the walking dead.

The sex is the hottest either of them has ever experienced and Simone discovers just how naughty she can be with Drake, while he finds himself feeling things for Simone he hasn’t felt in a very long time. When the Voodoo priestess learns of their relationship, however, she comes after him again. She's determined he won't have a future with Simone, even if that means killing both him and the woman he loves.

GUEST POST
What are the secret ingredients of a good Paranormal Romance?
(thank you for it)

Thank you so much for having me on your blog! And thanks for popping such a challenging question on me.

The first ingredient in any paranormal story is the new world you create. It has to be unique and exciting, with a perfect blend of things that are brand new and things that are common and mundane. The new world doesn’t necessarily have to be overly complex, but the details have to ring true. The reader has to believe that such a place, as well as such amazing and scary creatures could really exist. In DEAD SEXY, I created a world that will make you believe a guy really could be cursed by an evil Voodoo priestess to live his life sometimes as a man, sometimes as a zombie without ever knowing when he will be one or the other. In this world, you'll believe there’s a reclusive zombie living in an apartment overlooking New York’s Central Park. And you’ll also believe there’s one special woman out there who can see past his zombie exterior to the man he is underneath and fall in love with him.

But while the uniqueness of a paranormal world grabs you, it is ultimately the story that keeps you turning the pages. While there are some ingredients you'll only find in a paranormal recipe, the most important ones are common to every book you read.

First, a great paranormal story, like any great story, has to have characters you feel something for. You have to get emotionally invested in the hero and heroine—they have to be people you can envision as being real, and they have to come with that special blend of faults and attributes that make you want to see them overcome whatever adversity they are facing.

In DEAD SEXY, Drake starts out as a man interested only in obtaining things—riches, women, titles. While these faults at first make us wonder if he even has any redeeming features, they ultimately allow us to understand how far he really comes once he decides to be a different person.

Simon, the heroine in DEAD SEXY, has her own adversity to overcome—be it a writer's block that threatens to keep her from getting her book in to her editor on time, or a huge fear of wasting her time on yet one more guy that isn't going to be the right one for her.

Of course, every great book has to have the antagonist you wish you could slip into the book and smack. The antagonist must be someone that seems too big for the hero and heroine to overcome on their own, much like the nasty Voodoo priestess in DEAD SEXY. She’s so powerful you can’t imagine how the good guys can ever win

Which brings us to the final and most important ingredient in a good story—paranormal, or otherwise. The story must find a way to give the reader exactly what they were looking for, but it in a way they’ll never, ever, see coming.

Trust me, DEAD SEXY will leave you guessing and open-mouthed in surprise by the end. These things, in my humble opinion, are the secret ingredients in a great paranormal story.
