Interview Deep and Giveaway in Crimson (Return to Sanctuary #2) by Sarah Gilman

Published September 24th, 2013

Description:

Kidnapped by humans and raised in a research facility, Jett was taught to believe his own race of demons insidious and violent. But a friendship with the archangel Raphael shatters Jett’s reality. Caught between two worlds, his first months of freedom find him lingering on the fringes of his home colony, Sanctuary. When the human who stole Jett captures another demon youth from Sanctuary, Jett learns of the real plan—to steal Raphael’s archangel grandchildren. Jett wants to bring his captor to justice, but he must overcome the lies from his past and join forces with the demon Guardians, and the demon child’s older sister, Lexine.

Irresistible attraction grows between Jett and Lexine, but Lexine’s prophetic dreams of being mated to a poacher make her wary. And if Jett goes through the all-consuming process of becoming a Guardian, he may forfeit any chance they have of being together.

MB's INTERVIEW
Thank you, Mrs. Sarah Gilman
Why did you choose demons to be your heroes?
Demons in fantasy stories make interesting protagonists and antagonists. I love reading them as much as writing them. Being inherently evil—or inherently any one thing of limited scope—isn’t natural for a sentient creature. Personalities will always provide variation and growth. That makes the demon a perfect story character to examine—so much potential conflict. What will happen when they grow beyond the tiny little box of “pure evil?” How will they turn out when they sidestep expectations?

Are there traps to avoid when you write a paranormal romance?
All genres have their quirks. While writing these books, I often worry about my heroines and their races—human vs paranormal. Paranormal heroes are the norm, but the primarily female romance readership connects to the books through the heroine. It’s important that the heroine be someone most readers can easily relate to. Is that relationship diminished when the heroine is from another world or a member of a different species? It can be, but other issues can be the deciding factor: A demon heroine from another world becomes relatable when she struggles with humans situations, such as love and loss. Not keeping the paranormal heroine balanced in this way is a possible trap for paranormal romance.

What do you think is the most important quality of your book?
The most important quality of any given book is story. It’s important to offer a professional product (well crafted, edited), but the best prose in the world mean nothing without a story that engages and touches the reader. I hope my book does this, but of course that’s for each individual reader to decide.

Months, years after reading a book, I won’t remember how the writing flowed from sentence to sentence no matter what, but I’ll either remember the story or I won’t. A memorable story is key.

Adult Paranormal Romance – when the sexy scenes should be used and what are their limits?
As I reader, I’ve seen no limits! I’ve read everything from off-page-only sex to BDSM “edge play” in full graphic glory. In any given romance (erotica has some different rules) sex scenes need to enrich the plot and/or the characterization. So the limit, I’d say, is sex for the sake of sex. If the characters sat and ate a meal for three pages during which nothing happened except chewing and swallowing, readers would be bored. Same with love scenes. Story stops for nothing, even sex.

How important are the title and the cover of a book?
From a marketing standpoint, they are exceptionally important—as important as any first impression. Covers and titles may or may not sell a book, but they are the first thing a reader sees. The cover and title will either grab a browsing shopper’s attention or they won’t. A book can have the most compelling blurb possible on the back cover, but first, the readers to pick up the book and flip it over (or scroll down).

Book #1
In a violent world where fallen archangels are hunted for their valuable plumage, Wren knows one thing for certain: the human woman who saved him from a poacher attack will die if she stays with him. The demon responsible for his parents' gruesome deaths two decades ago pines for the chance to rip apart any woman who stands under Wren's wing. Wren doesn't expect Ginger to stay by his side once she discovers his ability to drain life with a mere touch, yet she lingers. When an unusual talent of her own reveals the location of Wren's father, Wren's isolated world implodes. With the help of the demon protectors he's sworn never to trust again, Wren risks everything to rescue his father, confront the demon who stalks his and Ginger's every step, and claim his eternity with the most courageous woman he's ever known

Book #0.5
Reading Order: Stand Alone

Humans and archangels don’t mix on the best occasions. When Saffron Morin goes to the gates of the demon colony, Eden, in search of her sister, she meets an archangel who is curious one minute and hostile the next, and she ends up the colony’s “guest” against her will.

Kestrel’s archangel psychic talent tells him the human woman’s life is in danger. Despite her family’s association with poachers who hunt archangels for their valuable feathers, he vows to save her life. Enemies by birth, lovers by choice, they give in to growing attraction as days pass.

Even if he succeeds in saving her life, he must hurt her to protect others of his kind, and he may not be able to live with himself after a betrayal he has no choice but to commit. In order to find redemption, the Collector’s daughter and an archangel must first find each other.
