Guest Post and Giveaway: Taming Darkness (Taming Darkness #1) by Kat Daemon

Published: April 2014
Cover Artist: S.P. McConnell

Description:

Since he was sentenced to earth eons ago, Lucifer has always lived by three simple rules: Humans are toys that are meant to be played with, love is a useless emotion, and the only creature worth fighting for is himself. To him, nothing matters but his own enjoyment, whether it be manipulating those around him, or indulging in the sins of the flesh with Lilith.

Then he found young, sweet, and innocent, Maria, who is everything that Lucifer detests. She has devoted her life to her one true love, God. Unable to resist a challenge, Lucifer sets his sights on tempting Maria away from his enemy. Disguising himself as Lucas Starr, he creates a world that not even Maria can resist. He never planned on having the tables turned on him.

Imagine Lucifer’s surprise when Maria brings him to his knees and shows him a glimpse of heaven once more. Blinded by his arrogance and an unlikely vision, Lucifer falls again, this time forgetting that some lines should never be crossed. When his greatest opponent, Michael, shows up, all Hell breaks loose.

Will Maria be able to accept Lucifer for who he truly is, or realize what Michael already knows: some destinies can never be changed?

GUEST POST
Lucifer and the Paranormal genre

Let’s face it, writing a story about the world’s most infamous fallen angel was not exactly a unique idea. Lucifer, Satan, the Devil, Beezlebub--whatever you choose to address him as-- is a common topic readers have seen sprinkled throughout paranormal works of fiction for centuries. From Dante’s Inferno and Milton’s Paradise Lost, to Joe Hill’s Horns... the devil is in the details.

Paranormal literature has been my favorite type of book to read since I was a little girl. I dabbled writing in this genre for years. Vampires, witches, and ghosts have always graced the pages of my imagination. What kept bringing me back to the concept of writing Lucifer, was his universal themes. The presence of true evil is something we find in every single culture. The story is so common, we all know it by heart. A glorious archangel of Heaven who leads a rebellion, placing pride before the fall. Turning his back on his maker, all things pure and good, he embodies eternal destruction and damnation. That’s where his story begins, but then what happened? We see snippets of Lucifer in the Bible, but nothing that truly sheds light on who he is. That’s what I was determined to do.

I have always been a sucker for the villain. The more charismatic the bad guy is, the more I find myself rooting for him. (A perfect example of this would be the character of Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Yeah, so he killed and maimed a lot of innocent people, but I still hoped he would end up with Buffy in the end. Cheek bones + London accent = lethal combination.) And who could be more charismatic than the original deal maker and founder of the ultimate temptation? I wanted to create a Lucifer that embodied all of the traditional elements-- beauty, arrogance, pride, and a thirst for revenge. It was important to me that those traits were woven into his genetic makeup. Yet, I added something I hadn’t seen before, a genuine fascination with humanity. Mix this fascination with a heavy helping of sarcasm and a dash of charm and you have Lucas Starr, the main character of my novel, Taming Darkness.

Gone is the image of horns, pitchfork and a tail. This is a creature who has adapted to existing among humans, and is easily recognizable as one-- a gorgeous one at that. Lucas does not for a moment shy away from who he is or where he came from. He is honest to a fault, yet his manipulation of words leave all he encounters so mesmerized they are unaware they have had dealings with the devil.

As Lucas is quick to inform readers in his opening scene, “I’m not the bad guy here.”
