What Indie author means?

"[T]he author retains their rights in the work. Either the author publishes in their own name, or sets up a publishing entity to publish, or is part of some co-operative, collaborative or company in which they have a significant input." - indie e-book reviewer

“Indie authorship and self-publishing are not quite synonymous but an independent author will have self-published at least one book.” - Steena Holmes

"Eisler defines self-publishing: ‘it means you keep the rights to your book and publish it yourself using distributor/retailers like Amazon, Apple, B&N, Kobo, Smashwords, and Sony, typically retaining 70% of the cover price instead of the 17.5% offered by legacy publishers (for digital editions). This isn’t what “most people” mean when they say self-publishing; it’s what everybody means when they say self-publishing." - The Creative Pen

"The indie-writers movement is a thing of great internal variety. Indeed, the one thing we have in common is that we publish our own crap. However, our offerings do display some differences, statistically at least, from the drivel that Pub World puts out. In particular, Pub World fiction puts more emphasis on style than does […]" - Francis Poretto, The Indie Writer's Guide

THE INDIE AUTHOR MANIFESTO -
We indie authors believe all writers are created equal, that all writers are endowed with natural creative potential, and that writers have an unalienable right to exercise, explore and realize their potential through the freedom of publication.

I hold these truths to be self-evident:

I am an indie author
I have experienced the pleasure and satisfaction that comes from self-publishing
I have a right to publish
My creative control is important to me. I decide when, where and how my writing graduates to become a published book.
Indie does not mean “alone.” I choose my partners.
I shall not bow beholden or subservient to any publisher. In my business relationships, I seek partnership, fairness, equity and mutually aligned interests.
We indie authors comprise diverse writers unified by a common purpose to advance, empower and celebrate writers everywhere.
I am a professional. I take pride in my work, and I strive to improve my craft to better serve my readers, myself, my fellow indie authors and the culture of books
My writing is valuable and important. This value and importance cannot be measured by commercial sales alone.
I celebrate the success of my fellow indie authors, for their success is mine, and mine theirs. Together we are pioneering a better future for books marked by greater quality, creativity, diversity, choice, availability, affordability and accessibility.

I think there are a lot of very good indie authors that may not be as appreciated and known as they should be.

However, these days I am finding that reviews and bloggers are the biggest help these authors sometimes get.

Hi! Stopping by from the Indie Love Blog Hop!

Thanks so much for your support of Indie authors! Salisa is right that reviews and bloggers are a huge help to those of us trying to get our work out there. But I would add that fans are also quite powerful because many of us rely on word-of-mouth. So if you loved that Indie book, tell someone! :)

What a wonderful way to explain Indie Authors! Some do such a wonderful job of publishing and promoting you would not guess how ahrd they work and how much they do on their own.

I truthfully rarely look at the publisher but just go by reviews on Goodreads and my favorite blogs. I've read plenty of indie authors without even noticing!

I think indie literature it's a very good alternative to the traditional published lit, and a new step in the evolution of creative writing.

I like Samantha Young, Mia Sheridan, Penelope Ward.

My reasoning for loving indie authors, is that it has opened up a whole new area of books to read. I have found a lot of books I otherwise would not have read and enjoyed. Quinn Loftis was one of the first indie's purchased with her Grey Wolves series. Love Becca Andre and Elizabeth Hunter as well.

Slowly making my way through this hop and surprised to see this manifesto. Nice! Also, great giveaway; you’ve taken indie support to a whole new level. I have several indie author friends and I am one, so listing a favorite is hard. However, I will say that indie authors provide readers with original, outside of the box, stories they never used to have access to and the world is better for it. Thank you so much for sharing and being part of this hop. A truly great addition to this event.

I'm not sure which authors I've read are indie, but I like the fact that I can trust that an indie author has had full control on what they publish so they really put themselves into their books :)

Nicole Edwards and Layton Green. I'm sure there are more, I'm just not sure who's independent.

Hi Just stopping by on the Indie Blog Hop

I absolutely love the indie author world! We readers get to have so many more choices with how publishing's changed. No more does not getting your book accepted by a big publisher mean that you can't get your book out there. And, we do see at times authors from the more indie world break out and become big names because of how wonderful their writing is. But most of all, I love the reader engagement. I love having authors as Facebook friends. I love being able to email someone about their books and get a personal response. You just don't get that with bigger names. But, indies show over and over how much they appreciate their readers. That fact is why I keep coming back for more - I'd rather support someone who seems to genuinely appreciate it than some big name author.
