Review #1 & #2 from La Patron Series by Sydney Addae

When you’re the top wolf on the continent with the backing of the Goddess, how does an enemy topple your kingdom? By challenging you to a fight? No. By changing the rules.

Description:

BirthRight - When you’re the top wolf on the continent with the backing of the Goddess, how does an enemy topple your kingdom? By challenging you to a fight? No. By changing the rules.

After three hundred years of fighting and service to the Goddess, Silas Knight is the Patron, Alpha to the Alphas on the North American continent. As the top wolf, he fears little and has seen most things. But when he discovers someone or something has been quietly disturbing the natural order of things, he’s surprised. Certain human women have the ability to birth fully functioning wolves, and that’s a major problem.

Jasmine Bennett has no idea her deceased husband was a wolf shifter or that her twin sons are shifters. Her life changes when she rushes to her son’s bedside after he’s wounded in Afghanistan and returned stateside. Now her life’s in danger because of her ability to give birth to a breed of beings she never knew existed.

#2 BirthControl - After sending out a mating call which Silas answered, Jasmine’s pregnant and depressed. Her life has spiraled out of control. Silas is angry that his first “litter of pups” are half breeds. A group of human breeders offer her a chance to leave Silas, offering a strange brand of protection. When a human breeder enters the compound using a weapon the wolves are helpess against, Silas and Jasmine understand the true meaning of Birth Control.

#3 BirthMark - In BirthMark, Silas and Jasmine learn they are being targeted for destruction. Their enemies are desperate to stop Silas before he finds them. With the backing of the Goddess, a nation of wolves, two bad ass step-sons, and a mate who has his back, Silas is fast on their trail. To slow him down, an onslaught of problems are unleashed, one right after the other barely giving him room to breathe before the next catastrophe hits. But as the Goddess’ top Wolf, Silas rises to the challenge in this fast paced tale, proving he is LaPatron, the Alpha’s Alpha.

This is the third book in the La Patron series. Book one is BirthRight, Book two is BirthControl and should be read first for a better understanding of this book.

#4 BirthStone - In BirthStone, Silas and Jasmine finally christened their pups and become frantic when the babies become sick and are at risk of dying. Silas is ready to clean house and accuses the five people who are new to his home. Unfortunately, that includes Jasmine’s mom and her fiancé, her sister, and her former pastor. Jasmine is unwilling to believe her family would do anything to hurt her babies. Silas disagrees and battle lines are drawn.

Since his enemies have not abandoned their plans to destroy him, Silas is under attack within his home and from outside. Determined not to lose hope or the war he comes to some startling conclusions just as Jasmine realizes she is much stronger than she realized before. Can the two of them work together to push back the threat out to destroy their home before it’s too late? Or will they lose it all?

BirthDate - In BirthDate, Silas goes to destroy the laboratory that has been a hub of wolf experiments and Asia’s former residence. Jasmine and Asia are linked in a way that no one can explain. But their connection proves to be critical to saving the young warrior as well as destroying one of the enemy’s strongholds. Leaving Jasmine in charge of the compound is risky but necessary for her to realize her role in his life. Through ups and downs, new threats and the name of their enemies, Silas and Jasmine’s love and commitment to each other is tried, tested and renewed in BirthDate.

BirthSign - In BirthSign, Silas and Jasmine are in the midst of their mating celebration. Yes! It has been a long, difficult road, but Silas wants the entire nation to see his gift from the Goddess and prepares a lavish celebration that lasts four days. Before the first event the U.S. Government calls in a favor and the ceremony takes a hit.

Jasmine voices her concerns over the request but accepts her mate’s explanation and the ceremony continues. Midway through the celebration, Silas discovers he has been duped and now has to deal with the Joint Chiefs, the President and worst… an angry mate.

As Jasmine comes to grips with just how powerful her mate is, he also realizes that she is just as gifted and that it will take both of them working in harmony to rule their nation in BirthSign.

This is the sixth book in the La Patron series. Jasmine and Silas have persevered through so much and their love shines brighter than ever. Although this is book six, hold on, because the next book opens with Asia and her special connection to Jasmine. The story will continue…

REVIEW

When I signed up for this tour (for a GP) I checked the series on Goodreads and I saw that, as many times before, readers’ reactions are quite different. Counting the fact that book #1 is free, I didn’t resist the curiosity to read it. I cannot say I regret it. After reading the first book, although I had the possibility to ask the organizer for the next, I didn’t waste time with emails and I bought book #2. Thus, if you are new on Mythical Books, and don’t know that if we don’t like a story (or at least something about it which is important enough in our opinion) we choose to don’t write about it (you know, the tastes are not to be disputed), it is clear now that this is not a “polite” / promotional review.

Now, let’s talk about the La Patron: “BirthRight” and “BirthControl”. Since 2012 I read a lot of fantasy / paranormal (inclusive romance) books and most of the time I found in them a lack of originality in what regard the plots, characters, paranormal attributes etc. But in these two volumes, I found some new or different things, even if sometimes it is just about the author’s approach of one or another aspect. This is the first plus. Another is the construction of the story: the main plot has its roots in the first book and grows in the second; I hope this will continue in the next ones. There are several interconnected conflicts (some obvious, some not so much), some are incipient, others are old and others seem to be already solved (I expect for them to be re-opened). There are some aspects which could have benefit from better attention, but still, I found enough explications for them and the possibility to get a better explanation in the next installment (s) exist. Having in view that the first two volumes were published in 2013, the explicit scenes are present, but they are few and so, the paranormal content is not just a vehicle for some repetitive explicit episodes.

The characters are credible (for a paranormal story J), have a track record that allows them to transfer credibility to the story and to evolve with it. They have prejudices, pride, ambitions, but also knew to accept (or not) a change. The “bad guys” are various too; with different aims, different reasons or just being involuntary puppets they could cause real problems. The paranormal features and also the human ones play an important role and directly influence the characters' decisions and reactions.

The rhythm is good and becomes better in the second volume. After reading them, I could say that, maybe, it should have been better if these two parts were merged in a single one... but between readers who – from what I have seen – prefer fewer pages, publishers that impose a certain number of pages and what authors want to say, the perfect solution is quite hard to find.

Having in view that you can get the first book for free, you have nothing to lose, but reading it you may have a nice surprise. Enjoy!

book #1 is FREE at all major retailers!

About the author:
Sydney Addae, a self-proclaimed readaholic and lover of most things paranomal, as long as it has a HEA. I enjoy people watching and traveling when I am not researching old tales to incorporate into my stories.

I live in the southeast and enjoy reading and writing all things paranormal. Nothing is more relaxing than cracking open a new adventure in a new world.

I love paranormal tales and characters in general and shifter stories in particular. Throw in the romantic element, strong Alpha characters who bend beneath the power of love and I’m over the moon. Sighs…

Thanks so much for checking out the La Patron Birth Series, I really appreciate it. Being so different, Silas and Jasmine have a long way to go to build their family, (den) but they're committed to getting it done right. BirthRight is a free download, the other five books are in Kindle Unlimited. Welcome to the Nation!
