Description:

Published: 14 March 2018

My first and only boyfriend believed I was too gutless to leave. He was dead wrong.

My name is Gillian. I graduated Harvard early and left his hot temper and everyone else behind for Dallas. Determined to make it on my own, I land a second job bartending at the neighborhood pub smack in drama central where most every jerk in the neighborhood hits on me—at a huge price.

A week into the job, the neighborhood’s very popular drug dealer falls to his death a few feet from the table I’m serving.
The cops say suicide, but the hot guitar player in the house band and I suspect foul play, and I intend to prove it.

We dig deeper, grow closer, and make a shocking discovery. We know the murderer.

GUEST POST
Meet Gillian and her imperfect fresh start in Becker Circle
Name: Gillian Davis
Age: 21
Birthday: September 21, barely a Virgo
Home town: Sugar Creek, Missouri, outside of St. Louis

It’s my fresh start across the country with my own apartment in Becker Circle, the “it” place to live in Dallas. After a week, boredom makes me do something else I’ve never done—go to a bar alone. “New Girl” must be stamped across my forehead because every guy in the George & Dragon interviews me like I’m a contestant on The Bachelor. Here are some of the questions I’ve gotten really good at answering.

What do you do? By day I’m an accountant studying to take the CPA exams, and at night I tend bar. Bartending is a job I never imagined an accountant would have, but I love it.

How do you feel about love? I’m sure love exists, but I haven’t found it yet.
Are you happy? I’m happy to be Dallas with a good salary, better weather, and a fresh start. I could never go back to my tiny hometown, and Boston isn’t big enough for my ex and me, but I miss Lauren like crazy.

How do you feel about this adulting thing? I love being on my own. It’s hard but lots better than making excuses for my dad when he passed out every night after we lost Mom, even though I learned to make a pretty mean Old Fashioned after making them for him every day. I miss how Mom always had music in the house. One of the last things we did together before she got so sick was go to a Queen concert. I loved it. I had no idea our time together would be so short.

What’s in your refrigerator right now? What, like food? Leftover Chinese takeout, OJ, half and half for my coffee.

What one thing would you change about yourself? I always ask myself how someone so book smart can be so stupid with guys. My ex always doubted my common sense. Every day here I get more street wise. I’ve screwed up, but I always own up and I won’t do it twice. I never want to repeat the mistake I made getting with my ex.

What do you like about living in Becker Circle? It’s cool to be able to walk to work and to restaurants. We have a great park, but mostly it’s the interesting people. I walk in the neighborhood and I see people I know. They’ve made me feel welcomed here. And since I met Jon? He makes me want to stay here forever.

What scares you most? Being under someone’s or something’s control. My abusive ex controlled me and alcohol controls my dad. I never again want to feel trapped.
About the author:
Addison Brae lives in Dallas, Texas on the edge of downtown. As a child, she was constantly in trouble for hiding under the bed to read when she was supposed to be napping. She has been writing since childhood starting with diaries, letters and short stories. She continues today with articles, video scripts and other content as an independent marketing consultant.

When she’s not writing, Addison spends her time traveling the world, collecting interesting cocktail recipes and hosting parties. She’s still addicted to reading and enjoys jogging in her neighborhood park, sipping red wine, binge-watching TV series, vintage clothing and hanging out with her artistic other half and their neurotic cat Lucy.
